Incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will run for reelection in 2022, but the global pandemic may change the way voters in Williamston select a candidate, said residents of the city in each political party.
Michigan public schools have been underfunded for two decades, but the results of the 2022 gubernatorial election could change that, education advocates say.
“Everybody running for office says they support public education, but voters have to look into what candidates actually propose to do,” said David Hecker, president of American Federation of Teachers Michigan.
Some residents in Williamston weigh in on whether Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s response to COVID-19 will impact her re-election bid in 2022. At the start of the pandemic when most states around the country mandated lockdowns, Michigan was one of the states to have the most strict and stringent protocols as some appreciated Whitmer’s efforts in keeping the community safe, some such as Williamston business owner Gary Cube, said she may have overstepped.
Across Lansing, voters stopped at community centers, schools, churches and government offices on Tuesday to cast their ballot in municipal elections.
Incumbent Mayor Andy Schor, elected in 2018, faced a challenge from 16-year council member Kathie Dunbar, while eight candidates competed for four seats on City Council. Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope ran unopposed.

Lansing residents head to the polls Nov. 2 to vote in several local races, but many are planning to vote by absentee ballot.
As of Oct. 13, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said that in Lansing, 92,505 absentee voter applications had been mailed out. Byrum said 15,348 absentee ballots had been requested, 15,265 absentee ballots had been mailed out to voters and 4,978 absentee ballots had been received and cast in Lansing.

Election night at the Williamston Roadhouse is a relaxing sight for people looking to wind down in the company of their peers, said Sammual L. Hitchcock, 30, a Leroy Township farmer. The Trump supporting-patrons are in high spirits on Tuesday night as they watch the presidential election coverage on Fox News. The restaurant is decorated in Trump-Pence 2020 banners and signs.

Watching the election coverage at the Williamston Roadhouse is a great place because the bar is located only a mile and a half from his house, said Hitchcock. “There’s great people here, we all get along, [and] we’re all hard-working people,” he said.
