Strange Matter Coffee comes to East Lansing

Popular, local coffee chain Strange Matter fills the space left by Biggby at the MSU Student Union. 

“I’m excited to have another non-MSU food option at the Union,” said Grace Densham, an MSU undergraduate. “I’m especially pleased with the fact that it is a small, local business. It was really sad to see Biggby go and be replaced by vending machines for so long.”

Strange Matter owner Cara Nader, understands the difference small businesses can make. “We are small, but very efficient at what we do,” she said. “I can’t speak to other coffee shops in town, but we pay a livable wage.

East Lansing Public Library offers counseling in response to MSU violence

Since February, counselors from the Community Mental Health Authority (CMH) of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties have been offering crisis support at the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL). Community members who need support following the Feb. 13 violence at Michigan State University can stop by the library Monday–Friday from 12:30–5 p.m. for free counseling, with no appointment required.

Mason’s Capital Area District Library has announced its third annual One Seed One State initiative which provides free seeds for the month while supplies last to encourage growing and saving seeds. 

In collaboration  with the MI Seed Library Network, multiple CADL branches have become Seed Libraries providing seeds brought in by local gardeners to teach the community about growing for a nutritious benefit.

Ingham concerned social media bad for students’ mental health

Links between children’s use of social media and their mental health raised concerns with Ingham County Intermediate School District administrators. Superintendent Jason Mellema said at the board’s April 11 meeting that it hopes to figure out how schools can do more to help students.

Mental health specialists at the ISD have served more than 550 referrals this year and still have students on the waiting list.

Michigan State student to represent Ingham County in Miss Michigan pageant

Alexis Alston has been known as an athlete, a track star, a tomboy, and a straight-A student, but as of this year, she is also known as a beauty queen. Alexis, better known as Lexy, will be representing Ingham County in the Miss Michigan USA beauty pageant. The winner of the Miss Michigan USA pageant will go on to represent the state of Michigan in the Miss USA pageant.
