Michigan legislature protects wine and beer distributors

The Michigan House Regulatory Reform Committee passed legislation at the
beginning of the month that stops large breweries and wine producers from
threatening to slow the growth of smaller craft beer and wine industries in
Michigan. The bill protects the independence of Michigan wine and beer distributors. Michigan operates with a regulatory, three-tier system that promotes fairness and a level playing field. Michigan Wine and Beer Wholesalers Association, that represents almost 50 beer and wine distributors throughout Michigan, including Dan Henry Distributing Company. “The new legislature doesn’t let us favor a certain brewer just because they offer incentives, so essentially, the best product gets the sale, because they have the best product,” said Matt Berger, a driver for the Dan Henry Distribution Company.

Michigan fights EEE virus

The state of Michigan declared a public health emergency in late September after reported cases of Eastern Equines Encephalitis. It prompted spraying by airplane over several counties in southwestern Michigan. The mosquito that carries the virus is native to Michigan. Five people have died of the disease and more were sickened by it. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services urges residents to wear long sleeves and pants when outside, especially at dawn and dusk.

Michigan State gathers for new business complex ribbon cutting

The Michigan State Broad Business of College officially opened the Edward J. Minskoff Pavilion with a ribbon cutting during homecoming week. Students, faculty and alumni all flooded into the new Minskoff Pavilion ribbon cutting. The new facility became open to the public this July after two years of construction. The facility covers about 100,000 square feet. Over 85% of undergraduate business courses and almost 100% of graduate courses are now taught in the building.

Foster Coffee Company opens up in East Lansing

A small coffee stand at a farmers market has grown into three stores around Michigan, including the newest one in downtown East Lansing. Co-founders of Foster Coffee Company, Nicholas Pidek and Johnathon Moore, started testing coffee recipes and catering events in 2014. “John and I met in high school, we became really good friends, started a band together,” said Pidek. They opened their first retail space on South Washington Street in downtown Owosso with the vision to create a better community. “When we looked at our downtown, we said, ‘Hey, the only way we’re going to do this, the only way this works, is if we work with other businesses, non-profits and civic entities to really help elevate the whole community,” Pidek said.

An airplane crashed in Lansing as the pilot attempted to land

A single engine airplane crashed while attempting to land at the Lansing airport on Thursday morning. The pilot was trying to land, when around 9 a.m. the plane crashed just west of Airport Road. The crash left three people dead and three people in critical condition at Sparrow Hospital. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The names of the victims have not been released.

Ingham County’s new animal shelter opens

Almost 200 cats and around 40 dogs are being cared for and await adoption in the new Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter. To maximize space, the new facility contains three meet-and-greet rooms that gives the shelter more space if extra animals were to be taken in. There are also double-sided dog kennels that allow the dogs to go outside and play on their new turf area, then go back into the kennel to rest. The shelter also has improved medical features as well. “Now we have a dedicated surgery suite, which is honestly it’s a fantastic facility.

Crunch Fitness opens up in East Lansing

Crunch Fitness in East Lansing officially opened on September 25th after four months of construction. Crunch is a gym found world wide. The one is East Lansing is just under 28,000 square feet and is located about two miles away from the campus of Michigan State University. The gym offers group classes and training as well as features like tanning and hydro-massages. “Super excited to be back in the Lansing area, and, you know, grew up here and went to Michigan State so just excited to give back to a community that gave me so much,” Adam Hourani, co-owner, said.

Waverly school board race intensifies

The Waverly school board race that once did not have enough candidates to fill the ballot for four open seats now has seven candidates. Four people met the Oct. 26 deadline to run as write-in candidates, Eaton County Clerk Diana Bosworth said. They are:
