East Lansing bagel shop innovates with menu, late shift

A.J. EvansJared Andrews, at the new East Lansing GoodFellas Bagels, learned about their popularity from all the students who came to the store’s Lansing location. In East Lansing, a new restaurant is doubling as a morning and late-night hotspot. GoodFellas Bagels Deli, a new restaurant on Albert Avenue in the same strip as the popular HopCat and El Azteco, is working to become one of the most accessible places in East Lansing.

Following the opening of the first GoodFellas Bagels Deli in January of 2020, owner Adrian Joseph kept his brand-new business afloat through a time where businesses were shuttered, particularly in the food industry. After working through the pandemic, Joseph began to notice a growing trend. “At the location in Lansing, we started to notice a pretty large influx of MSU students that would come there on weekends, and throughout the week,” Joseph said.

Cottage food producers want income cap raised

COTTAGE FOOD: Michigan home producers of jams, jellies, bread, baked goods, popcorn and other cottage food are asking for more leeway in the laws to do business. Proposed legislation would raise the $25,000 cap on gross annual income of the businesses that are not state inspected. It also would allow third party delivery systems and change the requirement that home addresses be placed on each label. Playa Bowls opens in East Lansing

The long line leading outside of the new Playa Bowl on Grand River shows that East Lansing is preparing for summer vacation with a smoothie and an acai bowl.  The Playa Bowls franchise opened its newest location in East Lansing on June 18. Its grand opening for the new attraction on Grand River was a huge success, with large groups of students and East Lansing locals lining the sidewalks in hopes to cool down from the heat with their favorite blends of fruit and juices.

Playa Bowls employee Brooke Soper said it has been staying busy since opening day. “We usually get quite a bit of people, I’d say between noon and 2 is probably our busiest time but it’s a pretty constant flow,” said Soper. Playa Bowl started as a small business in Belmar, New Jersey, but now has over 140 stores that have opened in the past seven years.

Pizzeria to open in East Lansing

When Peter Coratti and his nephew Anthony Coratti heard that there was availability to open a restaurant in downtown East Lansing, they jumped at the chance. “To have the opportunity to open up a shop in a big-time college town is very rare,” Anthony Coratti said. “East Lansing being one of the best college towns in the country is just, when the opportunity presented itself, we did everything we could to get in there.”

Anthony Coratti first started working with his uncle Peter Corratti when they opened Coratti’s Pizzeria Bar and Bocce in Howell in May of 2021. Anthony Corratti is responsible for the accounting and payroll aspects of the business while Peter Corratti is the owner.

The restaurant is known for its Napoletana-style pizza as well as its bocce ball courts that draw people in for dinner as well as entertainment. “We figured, one, we were going to provide great Italian food and, two, why not do something to allow our guests to get off their feet and entertain themselves,” Anthony Coratti said.

The restaurant was sold to Jennifer and Joe Bell in 1980. It has been a favorite to many in East Lansing ever since.

On the Facebook announcement, over 40 locals expressed their gratitude to the business and its owners.

Southern comfort is coming to East Lansing

In the life of a college student who struggles through studying for important exams, turning in assignments on time, pleasing professors to getting by on the broke college student budget – there are little things better in life than deep fried fast food. For southern students and chicken connoisseurs alike the new restaurant that’s about to arrive on Grand River and M.A.C. Avenue is about to shake up the city and give out-of-state residents a taste of home. Raising Cane’s, a Louisiana based restaurant company, announced in mid-February that its first Michigan location would be in East Lansing. The chain has more than 500 locations across America, however it has not stepped farther into the Midwest and nort-east parts of the country. So why Grand River over anywhere else in Michigan?
