They call it a pizza that started a style. And Detroit-style pizza has landed in Okemos.

The location at 2010 W. Grand River Ave. marks the 20th location in Michigan.

Known for its rectangular cut with a thick crispy crust, it’s no secret that the Detroit-style pizza is a big hit.

And Buddy’s Pizza Chief Operating Officer Katy Dean agrees.

“And I may be biased, but I have to say that Detroit-style pizza is the best.”

It started in 1946. Buddy’s Pizza says they were the first.

“We have a grand opening ceremony on Monday, April 4, at 11 a.m. It’s going to be a really exciting time to cut the ribbon and invite people in,” Dean said.

And if the pizza isn’t enticing enough, the COO said the first 100 customers on the opening day get free pizza for a year.

“It’s a booklet of pizza vouchers for the whole year, so some lucky folks will be able to take those home.”

The vouchers are good for one eight-square, two-topping pizza, per month, for a year.

Buddy’s is proud of its 20th Michigan location, seating about 300, with 280 inside and roughly 40 on the patio, the building also includes a full bar.

It’s been a long time coming for those in charge like Dean.

“It’s been a little bit of a process, over a year has gone into bringing this beautiful construction to life,” Dean said. “There’s been a lot of excitement building over the last year, so we are excited to finally be open.”

On the grand opening, all sales will be donated to East Lansing’s Haven House, an organization that provides emergency shelter to families.
