Making college parties sensory friendly at the MSU Museum

College parties are not usually what comes to mind when thinking of sensory friendly or inclusive environments. However a silent disco at the MSU Museum was both of those things. The disco was the first event in a series of events at the MSU Museum, called First Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, students can head to the Museum for a free social event. The disco was made possible by City Hop, a silent disco company based in Detroit.

Voting rights at stake in petition drive, legislative maneuvering

 The “Secure MI Vote” petition is making its way around Michigan communities. The petition is designed to change election laws in Michigan, including a requirement for in-person voters to present a partial Social Security number and photo ID. It would also require absentee voters to provide either of these on absentee ballot applications. Any individual who is unable to provide a photo ID would be required to present one in person within six days if their vote is to be counted.

Nonprofits regain strength from Ingham County grant program

Ingham County granted dozens of nonprofits the ability to create a lot of meaningful change. The Lansing Economic Area Partnership is a private-public partnership that works to bring business to Lansing and boost the local economy. $1.25 million out of the $11 million in the Ingham County Sunrise Small Business Grant Program, was awarded to 83 nonprofits across the county at the beginning of October. For many of these organizations, this means they have the ability to re-open for the first time since the pandemic began. This program operates through the LEAP to use American Rescue Plan Act Funds to fill in gaps in the community, according to Ingham County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bryan Crenshaw.

Ingham unleashes jack-o’-lanterns

Every Thursday-Sunday this month, the Ingham County Fairgrounds is hosting Jack O’Lanterns Unleashed. This event features more than 25 themed pumpkin carving exhibits, 5,000 jack-o’-lanterns, fire juggling and fall-themed food and drinks. 

The ‘under the sea’ exhibit at Jack O’Lanterns Unleashed on display at the Ingham County fairgrounds. “It’s the first event of its kind here in Michigan. It’s really unique because everything is hand-carved. So even though not all of the pumpkins are alive, they all took a lot of time to create.

Living by the Moon in Lansing
