It’s sad how Michigan State knew about the sexual misconduct of Larry Nassar but didn’t do anything, said David Mittleman, attorney who represents 37 victims of Larry Nassar. Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison, three counts of 20 years each, for child pornography. He has seven counts against him and is waiting for trail to hear his sentencing for the other counts that he has not been charged for. Nassar sexually assaulted and abused members of the Michigan State University gymnastics team and members of the USA Olympic gymnastics team. “This is the biggest institutional sexual assault scandal in modern day history,” said Mittleman.
When it comes to athletes, a lot goes into how they keep their performances levels high. One of those ways is through their nutrition. I spoke with Kate Davis, a registered dietician in Lansing, Michigan, on just how important it is to keep those things in mind for an athlete, as well as anyone trying to stay healthy. Davis graduated from Michigan State University with a master of science degree in human nutrition, with an emphasis in exercise physiology. She is a member of the United States Olympic Committee Sports Dietician Registry and has consulted teams such as the USA women’s hockey team, Grand Valley State University Athletics, and the Gatorade GFEAT Employee Wellness Program.
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A local gymnastics gym, Grand Traverse Bay Gymnastics, has been leaping with success. The gym separated from the YMCA three years ago and has been home to over 2,300 gymnasts in the past year. Jennifer Van Deinse, who has been the head coach for 10 years, says, “I believe that the success of Grand Traverse Bay Gymnastics can be attributed to our love for the sport and our desire to help each individual who attends our program reach their highest potential. We strive for excellence every day and teach our athletes to do the same.”
Owner Betsy Van Deinse says, “I love to watch our gymnasts grow and work hard to achieve their dreams. Gymnastics takes a great deal of mental and physical fortitude, so to witness how these young athletes train and fight to reach their goals is incredibly gratifying and awe-inspiring.”
Laurence Chalip, professor and head of recreation at University of Illinois, says, “In terms of the benefits the gym gained while being on it’s own, it really depends on the value of it’s autonomy.

Injuries are nothing new in the sports world. Athletes are no strangers to sprains, strains, contusions, concussions and broken bones. In recent years, injuries amongst female athletes have been going up, especially lower leg injuries. The three most dangerous sports when it comes to these lower leg injuries are soccer, volleyball and basketball. Examples of lower leg injuries are ankle sprains and strains, hip problems, foot problems, shin splints, pulled muscles, and the knee.
