STATE OF THE STATE: When the governor takes center stage Wednesday for her State of the State address, she’ll face the Legislature’s first Democratic majority in four decades. It will launch her effort to bring to fruition some past proposals that died when the GOP controlled the House and Senate. The lieutenant governor puts a higher tax credit for working families, a reduced maternal mortality rate for Black women and repeal of the pension tax among them.

FUNERAL ASSISTANCE:  Unlike several other states, Michigan has not upped the financial assistance provided to low income residents for funeral and burial services since the COVID pandemic. Across the United States, friends and families of those who died from COVID were eligible for up to $9,000 in funeral assistance through FEMA.

URBAN WOOD: City trees and demolished buildings could help save the environment and small businesses. A growing “urban wood” movement is producing building materials and lumber salvaged from city streets and buildings. The practice also locks global warming greenhouse gasses into products. We talk to mill operators in Hillsdale and Detroit and an Ann Arbor-based wood recycling expert.

SAT – Michigan is one of only a few states that still require students to take the writing portion of the SAT college entrance test. School officials say it is no longer needed because colleges often have their own writing test and do not require the SAT one for entrance. But the Michigan Department of Education says student achievement in writing is important and should be measured. Story references lawmakers from Detroit and Davison.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS: While political heavyweights battled it out this election some of the more hotly contested races were for school board. School officials say that in some races more money was spent from outside sources than they’ve ever seen. We talk to the Michigan Association of School Boards, the Michigan Education Association and a board member of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network. By Sarah Atwood.

CHRISTMAS TREES: This growing season for Christmas trees was the best year in a long time, benefiting Michigan’s 500 Christmas tree farmers. Michigan is third in the country in Christmas tree production, producing 2 million trees a year. We talk to farmers in Caledonia, Manton near Cadillac and Port Austin, as well as the head of the Michigan Christmas Tree Association.
