In this edition of Focal Point, we take you through the backroads of Michigan to small towns.

We start with a story here in Lansing, where one man has been building homes since the 1800s; a local high schooler is making the best of 4th down; a new exhibit focuses on surveillance in the community. Travel 15 minutes north of Michigan and you will wind up in Williamston, where a new depot is launched.

On this edition of Focal Point, thefts and vandalism in East Lansing have ELPD trying to crack down on crime; We take you to a climate change rally and walk for Breast Cancer. Plus, do you have a musical instrument at home collecting dust? We’ll show you how to donate it to a good cause. In entertainment, Michael Myers makes his way back to the big screens just in time for spooky season with a new movie hitting theatres. In sports, MSU continued its winning streak against Indiana on Saturday; Men’s and Women’s soccer was also in action as well; and an East Lansing High School student shows us why 4th down isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning for him.

Women for Tri encourages women to become triathletes

She is the ambassador for Women for Triathlon, a program that encourages women to join triathlons. The program hosted an information session at the Playmakers’ community room in Okemos.

Lyssa Kay Adams’ latest book inspires fans to read more romance

Once a journalist and now a full-time romance novel writer, meet Lyssa Kay Adams. Photo by Julian Stainback. Lyssa Kay Adams wasn’t always into romance novels until she read her first one in the eighth grade. She was inspired to create more romance novels on her own ever since.  

Adams was an award-winning journalist of nearly 20 years who gave up the world of telling true stories to write her own romance novels. 

Some of her novels have gotten nominations by the RWA, or Romance Writers of America, like “Wild in Rio” and “Seventh Inning Heat.” Since then, she has been a full-time writer for romance. 

Her latest book, “The Bromance Book Club,” made its debut at Schuler Books in Okemos on Nov. 6.   

With romance and a little comedy, Adams expects her latest book to give everyone an important lesson to learn.

Special education reform, student members discussed at Okemos School Board meeting

Okemos Public School Board of Education held a meeting on Oct. 28 to discuss issues around school construction, safety, special education and hopes of adding a new student member to the district’s board. First on the agenda was a presentation on changes to special education.

Haslett Robotics Club sees a spark in interest

Over the past years, Sunjay, 10, came out of his shell as a result of joining the robotics club in Haslett. The Haslett Robotics Club provides students with instruction in introductory engineering. This includes learning more about robots and how they are assembled.

Masonic Lodge celebrates 150 years of service

This is the Okemos Masonic Center located in Okemos. This center has been here for more than 150 years. Photo by Julian Stainback. The Masonic Lodge members held a special celebration for their 150 years of service to the Okemos community at their lodge on Sept. 21. 

The Okemos Masonic Lodge was chartered in 1869 and was built by the brothers of the lodge in 1970.
