TEACHER INCENTIVES: Signing bonuses aren’t limited to pro athletes. Some school districts, hard-pressed to find enough teachers, are paying them too. There are other new recruitment incentives and initiatives underway across the state. The governor touts them too. TRUST FUND: Townships are pushing for a revenue sharing and trust fund change in state aid that would put them on more even footing with cities, counties and villages. The legislation has passed the House and is awaiting Senate action over opposition from lawmakers from Three Rivers, Charlevoix, Milford and Oxford. STUDENT HOMELESSNESS: Homeless students often slip under the radar, and their plight draws insufficient attention from college administrators and others, advocates say. We learn about what Northern Michigan University is doing to address the problem, hear from the Michigan Association of State Universities and talk to a Lansing lawmaker who is pushing to establish a bill of rights for homeless Michigan residents. BICYCLE ACCIDENTS: Bicycling deaths are up in Michigan, and that worries cycling advocates, law enforcement and traffic safety experts. We hear from the League of Michigan Bicyclists and a former Washtenaw County deputy sheriff. Includes references to serious accidents in Ionia County, Clinton Township and Hillsdale. The Office of Highway Safety Planning has given grants to the sheriffs’ offices in Berrien, Macomb and Oakland counties and to police in Chikaming Township, Detroit, Kalamazoo, Lansing and St. Joseph. BLOOD SHORTAGE: Michigan’s two large blood banks, Detroit-based Red Cross and Grand Rapids-based Versiti, are grappling with a shortage of donors and canceled blood drives this winter. We talk to the lab manager for MyMichigan Health medical centers in Alma, Clare and Mt. Pleasant, the laboratory medical director at Cadillac Hospital, the medical director of transfusion services at Sparrow Health and the blood bank director for Munson Healthcare. By Theo Scheer. USING FISH: Fish-leather purses and wallets may make their way into Great Lakes fashion with an initiative to use 100% of commercially caught fish by 2025. One of the latest projects is to fully use the region’s whitefish, lake trout, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. Mackinaw City might be one research site. Companies in L’Anse, Detroit, Manistee and Munising participate. It also involves the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. DRONES, DEER & FISH: Do drones mesh or clash with hunting and fishing ethics and regulations. A company that uses drones to locate deer carcasses is suing to challenge Michigan’s ban on the practice.
