House Republicans scale back minimum wage and paid sick leave

Michigan voters came out in numbers last week to protest the recent changes to the minimum wage and paid sick leave laws that were approved early this year. The new bills, which passed the House and Senate during the lame-duck session, significantly alter the original legislation. Coming from various cities across Michigan, women and men gathered outside the Capitol for half-an-hour before making their way to the Rotunda chanting “lame-duck has got to go.” Roquesha O’Neil, a Detroit resident, traveled to Lansing to join the protests and express her displeasure with the lawmakers who amended the minimum wage bills. “It’s a dangerous game they’re playing because they’re hurting and breaking our families,” she said.

MSU junior creates clothing to reduce waste

Does a garment have to be just a garment or a platform for multiple garments? For Timosha Krivtsov, a junior in the department of Apparel and Textile Design, the answer is the latter. After discovering that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry, Krivtsov embarked on a journey to create a new recipe for clothing, one that would reduce fabric waste and harm the environment less. He found that a lot of the same silhouettes are used recurrently. “For instance, a hoodie and a crew-neck are essentially the same thing, but a crew-neck just doesn’t have a kangaroo pocket and a hood,” he said.

A rise in dog flu

The state of Michigan saw an increase in cases of dog flu this year. More than 160 cases were reported in the state. Dr. Stephen Carey, a professor in small animal clinical sciences in the college of veterinary medicine at Michigan State University, said compared to last year, this year’s increase was fairly strong. “In climates like Michigan, where we have really harsh winters, that tends to be more frequent over the summer,” Dr. Carey said. According to the Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter, the flu infection started out in southeast Michigan in the Detroit area.

Making voting easier in Michigan

On November 6th, Michigan citizens voted to adopt Proposal 3, a statewide initiative which will overhaul Michigan’s current election law. Also known as ‘Promote the Vote,’ Proposal 3 is a comprehensive measure which will allow people to automatically register to vote when conducting business at the Secretary of State’s office unless they decline to register. Proposal 3 proponents say it will make voting easier for every Michigan citizen, including those who think about voting in the last minute. “Proposal 3 assures voting rights for Michigan citizens more than they have right now,” said Mary Pollock, government relations coordinator for the Michigan chapter of AAUW.

However, two particular places on campus may have been slipping under your radar and they’re both located south of campus on Service Road. The Spartan Linen Services is the branch in charge of doing laundry for multiple departments on campus.
