UPEMPLOYMENT: While Michigan’s statewide unemployment rate dips below 5 percent, workers in the northern part of the state continue to struggle. The north didn’t benefit from the recovery of the auto industry and areas not strong in seasonal tourism are especially hurting.

MICHIGAN JOURNALISM HALL OF FAME: Four journalists will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at an April 17 ceremony. They are Lou Mleczko, a retired Detroit News reporter and former long-time president of the Newspaper Guild’s Local 22 in Detroit; travel writer and author Dixie Franklin; Detroit Free Press sports photographer Julian Gonzalez; and Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley.

TRAFFICDEATHS: The number of Michigan traffic deaths went up nearly 10 percent in 2015, just the fourth increase in the past 11 years and contrary to a long-term decline. Traffic officials attribute the rise to declining seatbelt use and to alcohol and drug abuse.

SERVICE: Miniature horses and dogs that help disabled people are getting a patch and identification papers to gain their owners greater access to public areas. About 40 Michigan residents have applied for the identification since the law went into effect about a month ago.

HISTORIC: Some state lawmakers are seeking to give people living in historic districts a bigger say on regulations that determine what they can do to their homes. There are 78 historic districts in Michigan including ones in Cadillac, Grand Rapids, Holland, Manistee, Three Rivers and Traverse City.
