Barking around Okemos: the Woof Pack

In Okemos Public Schools there are several furry friends that make 4,480 students’ days a little brighter. Student surveys said, “We love having them around and feel she is a wonderful addition. I would support additional support dogs both in our school and around the district,” and “It’s absolutely amazing how the dogs can get students who never interact with anything to interact with her and she helps open that door to help create those relationships.”

The Okemos Woof Pack is the emotional support dog program in Okemos Public Schools. From staff hangouts to walks starting at the senior center, the dogs bring joy everywhere. “I come in from lunch duty and I just see staff on the ground laying with her and petting her and stuff like that.

Construction on US-127 ramping up

The Michigan Department of Transportation recently requested to modify Trowbridge Road as a part of U.S. 127 improvements for traffic safety. “This work is part of a $205 million project funded by the Governor’s Rebuilding Michigan Program that will address safety and operations of the I-496/U.S.127 corridor,” said Erin Chelotti, the MDOT Lansing Transportation Service Central Manager. The Rebuilding Michigan Program set out to be a collection of construction projects to rebuild and modify the most used roads. “The work within the city of East Lansing’s right-of-way is required to connect the new I-496 WB/ U.S.127 north bound exit ramp to Trowbridge Road,” Chelotti said. Due to Trowbridge road’s exit ramps superstructure rating, MDOT wants to update the infrastructure of the bridge.

Renee Leone, owner of Quark! A science store, on Grand River Avenue believes the energy of a college town and the support that it gives is fabulous. “The energy from the students, the faculty, staff, and even the residents who live here year-round. It’s cool,” Leone said. “It’s one of my favorite parts is talking to everybody who comes in and getting to know customers and what brings them here, what they’re interested in.
