Gwen’s Bagels

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and events are held across the country to help raise money as well as to raise recognition for how pervasive the disease is.

On campus, MSU Baker Rita Lyon has created a ribbon-shaped cranberry orange bagel in memory of her mother, Gwen, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1972. Rita and four student bakers make about 150 dozen bagels a week.

This is the second year Rita has been baking “Gwen’s Bagels” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she says she has been satisfied with the success,

“Oh, they’ve been fantastic, last year we sold over 600 dozen and this year we’re going to type that by quite a bit I think.”

A dollar from each, “Gwen’s Bagels” sale is donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.
