Redondo Beach, Calif. — Pizza is a favorite of many communities, be it deep dish Chicago style or New York City thin crust. Locale 90 provides one-of-a-kind pizza, for the community of Redondo Beach.

Locale 90 is a family owned pizza restaurant in Riviera Village, a strip of businesses offering shopping and dining. According to the mission statement offered on its website, a group of brothers and their wives came together to open the establishment with the mission of selling gourmet pizza and being a prominent force in their community.

Josh Witherspoon, a manager at Locale 90, has witnessed and participated in these efforts throughout his time at the restaurant.

“Sometimes kids from the elementary school come in and we’ll help them try to make pizzas,” Witherspoon said.

Witherspoon was referring to a program the restaurant started with the local elementary school that allows teachers to bring in their students and learn about cooking. This is one of the more hands-on ways to give back, but the restaurant “donates money and gives gift cards” to local charities and programs that need it, Witherspoon said.

Charity and volunteering isn’t the only way Locale 90 services its community, as it’s the only wood-fired neapolitan pizza offered in the area. Offering a wide variety of flavors, styles, and ingredients, Locale 90 is a favorite for many in the community.

A recent Yelp review said “the South Bay needed a place like this” due to the consistency and uniformity of other pizza joints in the area.

Lee Simmons, a chef at Locale 90, grew up in Redondo Beach and knows the ins and outs of the pizza scene in the community. His knowledge of the area allows him to create a compromise between the owner’s vision for neapolitan pizza and the taste of the customers.

“I like pizza that’s made well, but also kinda fun,” Simmons said. “I try to add out of the box ingredients.”

Locale 90 has a long list of pizzas on their menu, but a couple stand out with customers. The roasted potato pizza and kale & egg pizza are “two of the bestsellers,” and adorned with unique ingredients, said Simmons.

Being unique is a major part of Locale 90’s allure, but there’s something for everyone at this restaurant. Colleen Miller is a server at the restaurant and grew up in the community. Miller has worked at a few different businesses in the area and feels she found a home at Locale 90.

“I’ve never really worked somewhere that cared about my schedule or tried to be accommodating,” Miller said. “I guess that’s my favorite part about working here, everyone’s very accommodating to us workers and the customers too.”
