The holiday season is approaching and with it comes the annual Michigan Made Holiday Art Exhibition at the Lansing Art Gallery. The exhibition, at 119 N. Washington Square in Lansing, features more than 60 artists presenting different forms of media. The fine arts featured include sculptures, paintings, printmaking, pottery, ceramic arts, mixed media, jewelry, photography, clothing and more.

“You can find a little bit of everything,” said Meg Tang.

As an artist specializing in creating simple, delicate jewelry, Tang has been involved in the Holiday Art Exhibition for years. Tang designed and hand fabricated the 30-35 pieces she has at the Lansing Art Gallery, using sustainably sourced resources.

Tang has been making jewelry for 21 years and has art in galleries and museums around Michigan.

Every artist’s story is different. Some are experienced, like Tang, and others are showing their art for the first time. Exhibitions and gallery sales director Katrina Daniels said they look to bring in people of all experience levels, with different artforms to share.

Daniels said the exhibit is unique in that it features exclusively Michigan artists. The Holiday Art Exhibition serves to promote local artists and support the local economy. Gallery coordinator Sarah Parker said the exhibition is special to the community.

“Something that’s really special is how it upholds our mission, showcasing artists from all across Michigan,” Parker said. Tang said it really brings attention to people in the local area that you wouldn’t know about otherwise.

The exhibition educates people about art and local artists in a way that makes art more accessible. Daniels said buying art can sometimes seem intimidating.

“We want to break down those barriers,” said Daniels.

The Holiday Art Exhibition opened Nov. 4 and will continue through Dec. 23. The hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. If you aren’t able to visit in person, there are online shopping opportunities for many of the artists.

“I enjoy working with The Lansing Art Gallery because they truly value the creativity that resides here in Michigan and they work hard to shine the spotlight on it,” said artist Kate Wilcox-Leigh. She has work in two collections, Knit Sails and the Gem Spotlight Collection.
