Blue Owl flies on wings of optimism

With the slogan #hopeliveshere you can probably see how the optimistic approach has helped keep the business afloat.

What used to be a place you could study, sip coffee, or see a local artist perform, Blue Owl Coffee, a local coffee shop in East Lansing, was not exempt from taking precautions alongside other businesses.

“We haven’t had an event here since last February” said Adam Subora, assistant manager at Blue Owl. Subora has been working at the coffee shop since December 2018 and says he’s seen the full transition.

Before the pandemic hit, Subora said, the shop would host events every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, sometimes on Thursdays and Saturdays. On some Sundays there would also be recitals so they were always packed. Blue Owl set the scene not only for itself but for the surrounding community.

From rappers to poets to singers and musicians, Blue Owl allowed for others to gain exposure and have a voice so when the coffee shop’s capacity dropped 50%, a person could only imagine the impact it had on the business as well as customers in East Lansing.

Some remember the old times at Blue Owl. Lawrence Stallworth, a former East Lansing resident, said, “I just remember it always being busy regardless of what day it was. There was always music on and always a vibe.”

He said Blue Owl was a hotspot for Spartan students and upcoming artists. Even though he is not an artist himself, he liked that the Blue Owl was more than just a coffee shop and provided the community with a creative outlet.

While some only remember the old days, some only have memory of the present. Jimmy Burke, who lives just above Blue Owl, said, “I’ve only gone during the pandemic. It’s basically like any other social distancing place where people are kind of scared to be really close to each other. Usually at coffee shops, people are eager to converse but recently it seems like they’re more leaning towards not wanting to talk.” said Burke.

Subora said, “Honestly, just coming in and buying a drink is more than enough support, giving us a shoutout on Instagram or social media is always great as well, or just word of mouth.” Despite the pandemic, Blue Owl has persevered and still continues to provide a space for the community.

“When we can have people in here [we’re] making sure all the tables are a safe distance from one another but still allowing people to get out of the house and come study somewhere if they feel comfortable to do so.” said Adam.
