With the holidays coming, employees of Salon 130 have decided to sponsor a food drive Nov. 11 to Dec. 11.
The employees had a meeting in October and decided to sponsor a food drive and a raffle. With proceeds going directly to The Mason Food Bank.
Stylists Kimmy Schroeder and Meaghan McKouen are coordinating the drive.
“The food banks are hurting,” Schroeder said, “there are all of these big charities that people are donating to. You kind of think of the local food banks last. Most of their donations come through schools or churches and that’s just not enough.”
Starting Nov. 11, donations should be taken to Salon 130. The salon is located at 130 W. Ash Street.
Each donor will receive raffle tickets based on the number of items donated. These tickets are good for a raffle that will take place on Dec. 11 at an open house at Salon 130 from 6-7 p.m.
Local store and restaurants have donated prizes. Most are gift cards. Donors include: The Daily Scoop, Bad Brewing Co., Los Tres Amigos, Beaches Tanning, The Vault Deli, Bestseller’s, Signsmith and The Courthouse Pub.
Franni Ball, a bartender at The Courthouse Pub, helped set up their donation.
“We try to donate to a lot of local things,” Ball said, “we want to help the community in any way possible, we are alway willing to lend a hand.”
Donations may include non-perishable food and basic toiletries. This drive was organized to help under-privileged families in Mason enjoy their holiday season.
Rita Vogel, a Rotary member, sees the need throughout the community.
“Our poverty rate is a lot higher than people think. It doesn’t get put out there because it’s an ugly statistic,” She said.
“This is a great opportunity to help out during the holidays,” Vogel continued, “with all the elderly who live around that are alone, they need help, too.”
The open house will include food provided by family donors and the raffle. Other prizes include hair products, coupons and prize baskets. Donations will be accepted until the raffle ends.
