Red Cedar Elementary is ready for its makeover. The East Lansing School District Board of Trustees voted 8-0 Monday to award the bid package for the renovations of Red Cedar Elementary School to Midwest Wall Company LLC for $273,000.

Midwest Wall Company LLC was one of 15 categories that are attached to different companies. Fourteen out of the 15 categories had been approved at the board’s last meeting on Jan. 22.

Red Cedar Elementary, at 1110 Narcissus Drive, closed four years ago.

“The perimeter of the school has been fenced off and is no longer accessible,” said Superintendent Dori Leyko.

In a presentation in November 2016, Leyko laid out a plan to the board that will have the school up and running for the fall of 2018. The plan is to have students from nearby Glencairn Elementary move into Red Cedar while Glencairn gets renovated in 2018-19. In 2020-2021, both schools will be ready to host full-time students.

Now that the bid has been approved, work can begin inside the building.

“We plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in late February or early March when we actually break ground on the outside of the school when the weather gets nicer,” Leyko said. “We will also be posting progress of the Red Cedar renovations throughout the process on our district website and Facebook page.”

Leyko said these renovations will improve the learning environment in many ways for students and faculty.

“Better heating, cooling so we can run summer classes, plumbing, electrical, insulation and floors are some of the many areas that will be improved for the school population for a better learning environment,” Leyko said.

Leyko said the board has not determined how faculty will be assigned or reassigned to schools. That decision will come once renovations are complete.
