What is police de-escalation training?

De-escalation training and tactics are designed to defuse a situation and take it to a calmer place, rather than a more dangerous one.

A U.S. Department of Justice report called it an approach to community policing and incident resolution that “increases the potential for resolving the situation with minimized force or no force at all, which reduces the likelihood of injury to the public, increases officer safety and mitigates the immediacy of potential or ongoing threats. A reduction in use-of-force incidents also reduces community complaints, promotes the perception of procedural justice and, most importantly, promotes resolution of events with the public’s compliance.”

De-escalation is more than a skillset. It is a strategy to slow down “an incident in a manner that allows officers more time, distance, space and tactical flexibility during dynamic situations …”

Elements of the strategy include slowing down, better communication, situational awareness, a protocol for using force and ethics.

Training comes in the police academy and in continuing lessons while on the force. Most major departments have extensive training schedules.

De-escalation training is implemented on a state-by-state basis. Many states do not require it. In the wake of the killing of George Lloyd by police in Minneapolis, many departments are looking at de-escalation training and practices.

What is Juneteenth and how did it get its name?

Juneteenth is a 155-year-old holiday, the oldest to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

It was created in 1865, marking June 19, 1865, the day word arrived in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people had been freed. The news arrived in Galveston more than two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It had taken effect on Jan. 1, 1863.

Juneteenth was embraced by the African American community, but historically has not been as widely accepted as other national occasions. It is not a federal holiday. Texas was first to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday.

The holiday, also called Freedom Day and Jubilee Day is a portmanteau word, a blending of June and nineteenth.

Juneteenth became much more widely known when President Donald J. Trump announced he would reopen his presidential campaign on Juneteenth, 2020, in Tulsa, in the wake of protests about police brutality against African Americans. The venue was also problematic. That was the scene of a 1921 riot that has been called one of the worst racially motivated massacres in U.S. history. In it, whites attacked blacks, killing hundreds, destroying their businesses and the homes of thousands. News of the riot, like the end of slavery in Texas, was not widely disseminated.

Announcing the reopening of a presidential campaign in the city where this massacre occurred 99 years ago on a holiday celebrated for ending enslavement of African Americans has been political dynamite.

Pandemic, protests lay wealth gap bare

The Associated Press today documents the striking difference in wealth between black and white Americans. It is not a new story, but a striking one that is not discussed in proportion to its on effects American society.

The story is revisited with the disproportionate toll of COVID-19 among African Americans and the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

First, you have to know the distinction between income and wealth. Income is money coming in. Wealth is savings: the accumulated capital in the form of money, investments and housing. While average income is higher for whites, the wealth gap is far greater.

The AP reports a wide wealth gap. It says, “The median black family has wealth of just $17,200 — perhaps enough to buy a car — versus $171,000 for the median white family.” Wealth is the reserve that keeps families out of poverty or lets one generation help the next advance. You guessed it. Lack of wealth can be self-perpetuating and can drag down succeeding generations. The article is worth a read.

Wealth disparity is one of several dynamics laid out in the Bias Busters guide, “100 Questions and Answers About African Americans.” If you are looking to do something during this time of national protest, educating yoursef with this guide is one answer.

Register for this MSU class; publish a book; bust biases about religion

To my hoped-for students:

Michigan State students have a unique opportunity to become authors in a series of books that fight discrimination. So far, our Bias Busters series has published about 20 titles and sold about 15,000 copies. Become one of our authors. You can see most of our titles down the right side of this page.

We plan books for the fall and spring semesters of the 2020-2021 academic year. Yes, we can do this class online, if necessary. The big question will be which groups we do. We are in a sub-series on religions. Classes have created guides on Jews, Muslims, Chaldeans, Hindus, Buddhists, evangelical Christians and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For the coming year, we have prioritized Amish/Mennonite people, Sikhs, and “The Nones,” the growing number of people people who are atheists, agnostics and members of no organized religion.

This one-credit course is called JRN 492. It will meet 4:10-5 p.m. Thursdays in the fall and 4:10-5 p.m. Mondays in the spring of 2021.

We plan an optional Bias Busters-funded visit to a Michigan Anabaptist community on Saturday, Oct. 24. If travel restrictions seem likely to prevent that, we will put off that group for spring.

Welcome! This will be an important and fulfilling course. Our objective is to publish a book that will make difficult conversations happen more easily. This guide will focus on \

We will use this opportunity and our journalism to humanize church members for readers who are unfamiliar with this faith group, which originated in the United States. Plans are to bring in speakers or have a field trip, but the key experience will be interviewing people about their experience and hopes for this project. It could also bring greater understanding to political discourse. For some readers, your guide will be the first time they have ever really paid attention to and understood who faith members are. Readers will learn much from you. The biggest lessons are typically not about differences, but about how we all share values, goals and principles.

This guide is part of a focus on faith in the Bias Busters series. Interfaith groups have expressed interest in our work and use it in their discussions. We have about 20 guides published or in pre-production. With this guide, we should have eight in the faith sub-series. Our plan is to have your edited draft of the guide by the end of the semester. However, we will not publish until we are ready. It is better to get these guides right than to get them done right away. Quality>speed. Your guide will be available through Amazon, Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Book, iBooks (iTunes), Google Play and Kobo. One of our goals is to make information as accessible as possible.

Course objectives

This course uses the journalistic values and skills of interviewing, listening and writing to produce a guide that is accurate, balanced and clear. We publish books in an innovative way, so books are on print and digital platforms. Bias Busters guides have included photos, graphics, audio and video. A group of informed allies has agreed to help review our questions and then the answers. Their help is essential to our success.

Required reading

You will receive a copy of an earlier guide in the Bias Busters series. Read it in the first week and absorb its approach, style and tone. Keep your book for reference. It will be your model for our style. You will publish your review on Amazon after the instructor critiques it for writing mechanics.

Read the MSU School of Journalism Code of Ethics and Standards, even if you have before. It is in the Syllabus section of D2L for this course and it is here:

If we cut corners, we can damage the entire series. You must do your own work on all assignments. Anyone who fabricates or plagiarizes will receive a 0.0 on the assignment and will be named in an Academic Dishonesty Report. This will generate a record with the Dean’s Office and the student will be required to complete online training in integrity. Lecture: Types of questions and how to find answers. Your TOP responsibility will be to find three Evangelical Christians to interview. We will talk about how to find them and how to find diversity within that community, but it is up to you to locate them and line up your interviews.

2) Read the Bias Busters guide distributed in class, paying attention to its non-judgmental language and concise writing. This is your template. Post a review of about 100 words in the appropriate Google Drive folder by Sept. 17. After I edit your review (I will not change or judge your opinion), you will post it on that guide’s Amazon page. Well executed reviews are worth as much as five points when posted.

3) Interview three sources of various demographics (age, gender, location) to find out what questions they feel should be answered in the guide. They do not need to answer those questions, though they might give you some ideas of where the answers are. Each student should post at last 10 unique questions. Your questions must be posted in the Google Drive document by Oct. 8. Our goal is 120 good questions. Do not duplicate questions a classmate has already posted. Interview each source long enough to get about 20 questions and to surface their unique interests for the guide. You will have an easier time if you post early. Don’t worry about getting too many questions. That is never a problem.

BE VERY CAREFUL that you do not cut and paste or plagiarize your answers. The credibility of these guides, your reputation, mine and the reputation of MSU and the School of Journalism depend on your care and honesty. Think how damaging it would be to us and to all 100+ students who have ever taken this class if we were to publish anything copied from someplace else. All writing must be original unless it is in quote marks and is attributed. I will use “TurnItIn” to check for plagiarism by posting the text in D2L. You can use that tool, too, before you submit something, just to make sure your writing is original.

We can start working them in class, using primary sources. Some sources are already listed in Google Drive.

Professors will send questions WITHOUT answers to allies for checking.

We will consolidate our edits in groups of 3-4. We need your edits and you will be graded (up to 30 points) on how thoroughly you do your own edits, so don’t miss this deadline.

This will be an extended mega editing class for all who can stay long and get the guide into good shape. Pizza!

Bring you on-paper edits to class. They will be individually graded on the basis of how many suggestions you make and how good they are. Mere comments like “nice,” “concise” or “confusing” are not enough. We need suggested edits. We need them for an editing session where, in groups of three or four, we discuss and consolidate individual edits onto master sheers. This is a lot to cover, so we move quickly and can stay late. The grade on this assignment will be based on the number and quality of suggestions you make for improving the guide.

Professor will combine edits in Google Drive and email copy of entire guide to allies for critiques asap.

We have only 14, one-hour classes, and we really need you with us. Two unexcused absences can drop your grade by 1.0. Three can drop it by 2.0. Four will mean failure. Two late arrivals equal one unexcused absence.

‘Foreign virus’ is calculated, wrong and dangerous, historians say

President Donald Trump’s labeling of Covid-19 as a “foreign virus” or “Chinese virus,” is not being seen as a sign of forgetfulness, but as a deliberate ploy to connect disease with people from other places.

From the Oval Office over the weekend in which he tried to demonstrated control of the situation and in followup tweets, Trump did not refer to the disease by its name, but laid blame for it outside the United States, sowing xenophobia.

CNN interviewed historians who said that the misnaming echoes times when outbreaks were blamed on Jews, Irish Catholics and Chinese people.

Nükhet Varlik, associate professor of history at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, and at the University of South Carolina, told CNN that such statements in previous outbreaks, “shaped the perception of how societies understood disease and responded to it for at least the last 600 years … They are not only dangerous for the present (because it informs policy and response), but also for the future because it leaves a legacy behind.

“We’re all in this together,” she said.

Detroit Catholic bishops banish LGBTQ group

Cover of 100 Questions and Answers About Sexual OrientationNational Catholic Reporter columnist and books editor Jamie Manson criticizes as callous the timing of a March 9 decision by the Archdiocese of Detroit to bar an LGBTQ group from holding services on Catholic grounds.

In his letter, Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Battersby wrote, “a Mass for Dignity Detroit members – one which rejects Church teaching on human sexuality – is not possible in any parish church, chapel, or diocesan facility, and is indeed forbidden everywhere in the Archdiocese of Detroit. This will no doubt be difficult for some to hear, but it arises from heartfelt pastoral concern for members of Dignity Detroit.”

Dignity Detroit is chapter of DignityUSA, a national organization that has, for 50 years, worked for full acceptance of LGBTQ persons into the Catholic Church.

Coronavirus curbs major religious holy days

Next month, most of the world’s major religions have festivals involving large gatherings of people. Easter is on 12 April (a week later for Eastern Orthodox churches); Passover begins on 8 April; Rama Navami, an important Hindu festival, is on 2 April; while the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi is a few days later. The Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins around 23 April.

We are already seeing limitations on weekly services and dispensations from attendance as these faiths try to reduce the crowding that can lead to transmissions. Communion by the cup, handshakes of peace and other practices are being discouraged.

In April, from St. Peter’s Square to Mecca, limits on the hallmark events of major world religions could have restrictions that eclipse what we have seen so far.

The Guardian reportss that adherents of all these religions, as well as Sikhs and Hindus are feeling the could feel Covid-19 intruding on their practices in April.

COVID-19 fears hurt Millennial, Gen Z spending most

Consumer spending, key to the health of the U.S. economy, is taking a hit from worries about the coronavirus pandemic.

Millennial and Gen Z are cutting their spending more than older people, although every generation is concerned, according to Firstinsight.com.

Experience has a lot to do with this. Millennials and Gen X not only remember the Great Recession, they are still digging out from wage setbacks, student debt and concerns about building the wealth they know they will need later.

Our double generations guide says, “The 2007-2009 Great Recession and the years after hit millions of Millennials at a critical time in their financial lives. It hurt more than just their income. It caused debt and reduced home ownership, which limited wealth accumulation. A 2018 report by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis said some Millennials might never recover.”

Alabama’s ban on yoga in public schools challenged

Alabama in 1993 barred public schools yoga in public schools along with other practices such as “meditation” and “guided imagery,” under a general prohibition of the use of “hypnosis and dissociative mental states.”

The 27-year-old ban is being challenged by Democrats and Republicans on the Alabama House’s Education Policy Committee. The bill would require that “all instruction in yoga shall be limited exclusively to poses, exercises and stretching techniques” and that all techniques “shall have exclusively English descriptive names” and that “chanting, mantras, mudras, use of mandalas and 11 namaste greetings shall be expressly prohibited.”

The ban is being defended by a Christian advocacy group whose executive director on the basis of religious freedom. He calls yoga “the Hindu religion.” NBC News quotes Joe Godfrey, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program, as saying “It’s an issue of separation of church and state. You’ll hear people invoke that when it comes to Christianity, because they don’t want prayer in school. Yet they want to teach yoga?”

The nature and use of yoga are far from simple. Some Hindus maintain that Hinduism is not a religion at all, but a philosophy or way of life. Others argue that removing yoga from its religious and cultural context and treating it simply as a form of exercise is cultural misappropriation.
