Alarmist rumor about Muslims and presidency is 10 years old

No, the Muslim population in the United States will NOT be large enough by 2040 to elect the president. And it won’t be true in 2060 or 2080 or in any election we can foresee.

The myth-busting site Snopes goes to some lengths to show that, even with the growth of the Muslim population, the numbers just aren’t even close. By 2040, about 2 percent of the nation’s population will be Muslim. Not close.

Snopes wrote that the rumor surfaced this month.

However, the rumor has been circulating for 10 years. Not true then, still not true.

The falsehood is being circulated to stoke fear, judging from the fact that it sometimes is accompanied with statements about infidels. And the same claim is made about populations in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Some people posting and reposting this mathematical impossibility have no regard for the truth. Others might just be passing it along because it fits their narrative of Muslims in America.

For those who want to know what is really going on, there is “100 Questions and Answers About Muslim Americans.”

One of the items is this:

How many Muslims are there in the United States?

The Census Bureau does not count religions, so reports vary. The U.S. Council on Foreign Relations reports that estimates range from 2 million to 7 million. The higher estimate would equal about 2 percent of the U.S. population.

Not close. Get the facts.
