Black hairstyle discrimination might get trimmed

Kansas and Wisconsin are the latest states trying to outlaw schools and workplaces from discriminating on the basis of hairstyles.

The incidents most often include Black styles such as dreadlocks, braids and twists.

Book cover for 100 Questions & Answers About African AmericansThe Associated Press reported that legislators believe that “employers and teachers often wrongly see white people’s hair as the standard for what’s clean and professional.”

Bills target discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations because of styles “historically associated with race.”

Such measures have been introduced in more than 20 states. California, New York and New Jersey approved similar laws last year.
