Tennessee allows adoption denials by same-sex couple adoptions

Cover of 100 Questions and Answers About Sexual OrientationTennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a law Jan. 24 that would give state funding to faith-based adoption agencies that prevent LGBTQ+ couples from adopting.

The bill’s sponsor, Tennessee Sen. Paul Rose said his bill is “solely about freedom” because it will allow agencies to arrange adoptions as they wish.

Supporters say gay or queer couples cannot raise children, as children need a mother and a father, not a same-sex couple.

However, according to the American Psychological Association, same-sex couples are 50% less likely to divorce than straight couples.
