How did Black History Month come to be?

Book cover for 100 Questions & Answers About African AmericansHere is answer on the history of Black History Month:

The idea had its origins in 1915. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard PhD, and others established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. The Journal of Negro History began a year later.

In 1926, Woodson created Negro History Week to bring attention to history that was not in school curricula. U.S. presidents have annually recognized February as Black History Month starting with Gerald R. Ford in 1976. The United Kingdom and Canada observe it, as well.

Black History Month has been controversial. Some say that designating just one month for Black history confines and diminishes it during the rest of the year. Others call it unnecessary special treatment.

This month, we will publish more answers from “100 Questions and Answers About African Americans.” We will covert issues too, as they come up and as they relate to the almost 20 other cultural guides in our series on cultural competence.

“100 Questions and Answers About African Americans” is available from Amazon or the Front Edge Publishing bookstore.
