Visa overstays get new attention in immigration enforcement

Book coverIn another tack on fighting unauthorized immigration, President Trump on Monday gave the Department of Homeland Security 120 days to draft a plan to reduce the number of people who overstay their visas to enter the United States. It targets countries that have overstay rates of higher than 10 percent.

In 2016 and 2017, more than 600,000 people entered the United States on legal visas, but are not recorded as having left on time, making them subject to deportation.

In those years, overstays outnumbered illegal border crossings, an item in the Bias Busters guide 100 Questions and Answers About Immigrants to the U.S.

A 2018 Homeland Security report showed overstay rates by country.

These are the countries with overstay rates of more than 10 percent and the total number of people reported to have overstayed from each in 2017.
