TIME’s Dalai Lama profile answers some big questions

TIME’s March 18 cover story on the Dalai Lama answers a lot of questions.

Given all the streams of Buddhism, how did he become the face of this religion, which numbers some 500 million people?

How did he become the Dalai Lama?

What is his significance to non-Tibetan Buddhists?

Why does he live in exile, outside of his homeland in Tibet?

What are the issues between China and Tibet, and how does the Dalai Lama fit in with them?

Why is China so interested in Buddhism lately?

How has Buddhism changed in the United States?

These are some of the issues Michigan State University students are taking up now as they write a new Bias Busters guide, “100 Questions and Answers About U.S. Buddhists.”

The guide will be published in print and digital editions later this year. You can see the whole series on Amazon.
