Student signs into vote at the MSU Union

Matt Williamson

The City of East Lansing sets up several polling places on campus and off campus where students live. This was the polling location in the third floor of the MSU Union for the 2022 election. Strong turnout from young voters nationally was reported.

Bella Montagno, who said she wanted to vote for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and all three of the proposals on Michigan’s ballot, didn’t have to go far.

She is an English major at Michigan State University and voted at the MSU Union.

East Lansing had campus precincts at the Union, Brody Hall and three at IM West.

The Union is Precinct 12. Outside of that polling location, Ian Claassens greeted people at the voter information desk. His job here is to ask voters if they’re already registered, for their basic voter credentials, or to inform them where to go if they need to register.

He was working from 6:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. He said he took this job because it sounded like a fun way to pass the time.

Cathy Scott was the Precinct 12 election chair. She was stationed inside the voting location near the voting booths in the Lake Huron Room on the third floor.

Cassidy Tomezak, an MSU student majoring in human biology and economics, was a first-time voter and brought her friend. Tomezak said all three proposals were all important. She said she voted for incumbent Whitmer rather than Republican challenger Tudor Dixon.

Although Tomezak was registered to vote at the Union, her friend wasn’t.

Claassen told Tomezak’s friend, “Voter registration for East Lansing takes place at City Hall. Voting closes at 8 p.m. but you still have time to wait in line to register.”
