As the rain began to fall down at halftime, the celebration started for the Williamston Hornets.

The win gave the Hornets a homecoming victory, and a share of the Capital Area Activities Conference Red title along with Mason and Haslett.

Officials called the game on Friday at halftime due to lightning as Williamston (4-2, 3-1) beat Lansing Eastern (2-4, 1-3) 34-0. A big part of the large lead were plays made by senior Austin Stump who scored two touchdowns, a receiving score and a blocked punt return.

Stump said he will be able to look back on this game and know that he left his mark on the Williamston program.

“It feels amazing to leave something on the field this year, so that I can look back later on and be like wow we won that,” said Stump.

Stump says the share of the title can be attributed to not only hard work done by the team on and off the field but also the dynamic that the team is turning into a second family.

“I am a captain on the team, I really feel like this team is coming together like a group of brothers,” said Stump.

Another key contributor for the Hornets on Friday night’s win was junior Quarterback Alex Petersburg. Petersburg threw for 76 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Petersburg credits the game plan put in by the coaches during the week for the homecoming win.

“Coaches put in a great game plan, we repped it all week and got to execute it out on the field,” said Petersburg.

Being the quarterback on the team, Petersburg feels the pressure week in, week out as a larger role is put on him.

Petersburg, however, said the team steps up, and he contributes that to the success of the team.

“There’s definitely a lot on me given the position I play, but our teammates, the guys over there in the locker room, have really helped me out, ” said Petersburg. “They do just as much as I do, so all the credit to them.”

One of those teammates that has stepped up into a prominent role on the team has been sophomore Noah Dunckel.

Dunckel, who had an interception on defense Friday, said getting his first homecoming win will be something he will always remember.

“It feels amazing, we played incredibly well,” said Dunckel. “We have been preparing all week for this and everything we did turned out great.”

Dunckel felt the challenge of being moved up to the varsity team for the first time this year but says the seniors and the coaches on the team made the whole process smooth as could be.

“All the seniors have been great, they’ve really helped me out,” said Dunckel. The coaches as well, they’ve always been there for me, always giving me tips and getting me better.”

Williamston plays at Olivet High School (5-2, 4-0) next Friday night at 7 p.m. Lansing Eastern looks to bounce back at home against Sexton High School (2-5, 2-3) at 7 p.m. as well.
