Two Eagle Scouts from DeWitt Troop 77 were recognized by both the DeWitt Public School Board and the DeWitt Charter Township Board.

Alex Williams and Adam Jaycox became Eagle Scouts. The rank is the highest achievement in the Scouts BSA program.

Scoutmaster Phil Ramirez has been the troop leader for the past year and a half. “Watching Alex and Adam progress into young men has been the best thing. Not only have they been learning skills, but they have become leaders. It’s now their job to lead other scouts,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez said the process takes years. Each scout has to dedicate the time and complete their project when they are 18. Scouts fill out application forms and submit project proposals. Once approved they fundraise, find volunteers and complete the project.

Williams’ project was to build 17 Kuranda dog beds for the Capital Area Humane Society. He oversaw the planning, fundraising and construction of the beds.

Williams has been a scout for almost seven years. “Being honored was amazing because it gave me a sense of completion. It was the end to a long journey, and it really made me look back on all that’s happened during my scouting journey. The good and the bad.”

Williams has also held a leadership position for 1,466 days and says that anything worth doing requires hard work and dedication.

For his project, Jaycox replaced all dilapidated dumpster fencing and landscaping timbers outside of Redeemer Church of DeWitt.

Jaycox has been a scout for 11. He said,  “It feels good to be a leader. I learned that not only do leaders have to help people get stuff done, but they must do it in a way that is kind and respectful to those you are leading.”

Jaycox said he felt “as though my hard work had paid off and I made the people around me proud.”
