Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen plans to build a new location near the intersection of Cedar Street and Willoughby Road in Lansing.

The restaurant will replace the China East Buffet that formerly operated at 7050 S. Cedar St., across from Kroger, according to Lansing’s Department of Economic Development & Planning. The location is near the city’s boundary with Delhi Township.

Paula Sherman, 42, who works at the Bookshelf bookstore across the street, welcomes the change. She said she is excited to try the restaurant once it opens, adding that the lines at other locations in the Lansing area are always long.

One concern some residents have is the effect the new restaurant could have on traffic along the busy corridor.

“I think traffic will get in the way,” Sherman said, “but it depends on if they have the room to fit 20 cars…. A lot of the businesses on this street are real close to Cedar Street, so I think that’s going to be a problem.”

Cameron Kilgore, who works O’Reilly Auto Parts just down Cedar Street, and coworker Zach Jorae, both in their 20s, are also looking forward to the new restaurant.

“I’m sick of Taco Bell and McDonald’s,” Kilgore said.

Kilgore and Jorae however, are not concerned about the possible traffic issues. They said it’s hard for them to see how traffic could get worse than what it already is in the area.

There are two other Popeyes locations in the area, at 3010 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Lansing and at 4324 West Saginaw Highway in Delta Township.
