Grand Ledge Public Schools is collecting applications for a new director for diversity, equity, inclusion and student support until Oct. 22.

The school board created the position in response to recommendations from the district’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

The committee was created in June 2020 after community feedback stemming from a history of events in Grand Ledge and the national protests during this time regarding the death of George Floyd.

The district’s student population is 77% white, according to state figures

“Their main goal is to support students and help them all feel included and work to make sure that diversity and equity issues are part of the conversation at the district level,” said John Ellsworth, the director of communications for the district.

This director along with the committee would be working with school officials to focus on the requirements of various federal laws that seek to provide support to students from various races, ethnicities, genders and social classes.

Ellsworth said the district is looking for someone with the right “education background that has some expertise in the current trends of thinking around student support, diversity, equity and inclusion and has some leadership experience that can work with both staff and students.”
