The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 2 of East Lansing, is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the state of Michigan. Troop 2 will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on Oct. 31, with members of The People’s Church and their greater scouting community.

Nicole Mostellar, assistant to the city manager of East Lansing, notified the public that the City Council passed a resolution at its meeting on Oct. 5, which recognized the 100th anniversary of Troop 2.

The counsel acknowledged Troop 2’s years of achievements and community service and wished the troop success.

Life scout Karen Mitchell took the podium and spoke on behalf of Troop 2 at the meeting.

“We are the oldest continuously chartered troop in the state of Michigan. The People’s Church has been our outstanding chartered organization since Oct. 31,1921. We would like to thank the City of East Lansing and The People’s Church for the support they have shown us over the years,” said Mitchell.

The People’s Church is a multi-denominational congregation that was founded in 1919, at 200 W. Grand River Ave. East Lansing.

Zack Matthews, the facility director at The People’s Church said the event is coming along.

“ The event is being held inside and the Boy Scouts are baking a dessert; the event is also combined with our harvest festival … we’ll be grilling hot dogs,” said Matthews.

The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 2 of East Lansing is co-ed. The “boys only” policy was eliminated in 2019. Troop 2 supports every eligible youth to learn responsibility, leadership, and other skills.

Troop 2 scouts perform community service; including collecting and redistributing clothing, providing school supplies and necessities for families in need, and more.
