Recently, Delta Township emergency responders became the first crews in the Lansing area to acquire a new medical device called a laryngoscope. The equipment video to help for the EMS crews insert an intubation tube to help a patient breath.

The devices cost about $1,500 each.

Delta Township Fire Department Training/EMS Capt. Matt Calus said that part of the problem with the old way of intubation was having to be so close to the patient to see their airway.

Last year, the Delta Township Fire Department attempted 65 intubations, on what Calus estimated were about 40 patients.

Calus said he hopes surrounding areas will adopt this new equipment. He said it is worth the lives that have the potential to be saved.
