We might not ever forget to ride a bike once we learn how to, but where is the best place to buy one? Denny Vandecar, owner of Denny’s Central Park Bicycles believes he has answered that question. He has owned the shop for over 55 years in the Meridian area, 35 of them at his current location.
“We sell completely different bicycles then they do at a big box store, ours are lighter, and we have a wide variety of parts you can buy for them,” Vandecar said, “You can service your bicycles here as well, and the assembly of our bikes is a big deal, it takes a big step ahead of others.”
Vandecar continued to elaborate on the importance of the assembly of the bikes in his shop, stating the quality of the parts and the care taken into the process makes his bikes superior to those of a generic bicycle in a big box store.
“The way we assemble them, our extended warranty, and our extended service all make the difference,” Vandecar said, “We only stock a quality product that we can get a warranty on, so the manufacturer will back us up, that why we feature the Specialized brand.”
For the everyday bike rider, Vandecar gave his recommendations on what products he would consider purchasing.
“Something more on the inexpensive side probably, stronger and tougher, probably a mountain bike style for the all-purpose user,” Vandecar said.
Tire size was also discussed by the owner, and which wheels are best for specific conditions.
“The fat tire bike was originally designed for the snow, but it has been found that it is great in the sand and on the trails,” Vandecar said, “They are much lighter and easier to turn then one would think, but they are on the slightly more expensive side.”
The bike shop is very involved in the community, as Denny’s holds a weekly mountain bike ride, and a weekly ladies ride in the summer time. The weekly mountain bike rides are always held a different location within an hour radius of the shop. As for the ladies rides they all begin at the store itself.
“We always do anything we can for the community,” Vandecar said.
Other community involvement includes helping pay for the pump track off of Meridian Road as well as the North Lake Lansing Park tool supply and air.
“The selection at this store is fantastic, only high quality products, and they carry the Specialized brand which is my personal favorite,” said Todd Turner, a Meridian resident and bike enthusiast.
Turner has been a bike rider for many years, and can’t believe he hasn’t spotted the local shop before.
“It was my first time in the shop, I was just driving by and saw what they had outside,” said Turner, “They were very friendly and well educated on all their products.”
