Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum announced by email at 6:12 p.m. May 1 that an office shutdown that began earlier in the day would be extended through May 2. East Lansing and Haslett school districts have elections on May 2. Byrum said elections will go on as scheduled.
The closing began shortly after noon on Monday over concerns with the security of the county’s network.
Byrum’s statement was, “It is important to point out that this is a county-wide network security concern and not just an issue that my Office is experiencing. I have responded aggressively with the utmost caution because there is a significant amount of sensitive data that is filed in my office.”
According to Byrum, the statement said, the action was based on information from the county’s IT Department. She was quoted as saying, “This was not hacking, but rather viruses.”
The Ingham County Courthouse in Mason and the Lansing Office in the Veterans Memorial Courthouse are affected.
