“I have received a number of referrals by keeping up with my contacts, and my contacts being able to quickly mention me in their social media posts,” said Mark Jacobsen, FreedomRE Realtor. “For example one client I’m working with mentioned she was looking for a Realtor, and a friend of mine mentioned me (on Twitter). I followed up with a DM (direct message), and we’re closing on their new house next week.”

He’s not the only one using social media tools in a practical way. Kalynne McIntyre, a digital branding specialist for M3 Group, said social media helps a business get their name out to a target market and bring awareness to consumers.

“Social media is definitely important for businesses to use because it’s going to be around for a while,” said McIntyre. “It’s a marketing tool that plays a big role in promotion and there is little to no cost to use it.”

“Businesses can use social media for a wide variety of things,” said Gary Schirr, Ph.D., associate professor of marketing at Radford University. “Things like generating leads, engaging with customers, promoting open job positions, and showing fun content to entertain consumers are all done through a social media platform.”

Schirr said social media is so beneficial to businesses because “customers are so accessible. They’re on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and there is so much potential for them to buy.”

Gabby Johnson, a Lansing Community College student said that she follows her favorite businesses and brands on Instagram.

“Being able to see what upcoming deals my favorite businesses have is definitely a plus because I am on social media throughout the whole day,’ said Johnson

It’s not all about text, either. Said Schirr: “Videos have become more and more popular because this is a medium that can show something unique.”

According to Upkeep Media, “It’s really about using the best social media platform for the target audience. Our marketing team worked with a local REALTOR that uses Snap Chat to engage with younger buyers and renters, which was the best way to get their attention.”

Travis Post, system manager of Summit Comics and Games, said the store is very active on Twitter and Facebook.

“We really get to engage with customers this way because even if they don’t come in the store, they will know what deals we have that day or what the book of the month is,” said Post.

Summit Comics and Games is located at 216 S. Washington Square in Lansing.

Jacobsen said, “At FreedomRE, I use social media to connect to new prospects, and stay in touch with existing clients both through personal and business accounts.’”

“Social media is the “water cooler” of today where people go to talk about their lives, ask questions, and have fun,” said Jacobsen. “Selling real estate is a combination of not only promotion, but also building relationships, and providing help on all aspects of a client or prospects housing needs.”

Jacobsen said he takes advantage of the social media platforms on Facebook and Twitter.

Johnson said, “I think social media marketing gives customers a chance for customers to interact with these brands in a way that is not as annoying as a regular ad.”
