Families and members of Dansville’s community gathered last week for the unveiling of the Dansville community center. What was formerly the Dansville Methodist church has been renovated into a multi-purpose building with space for a variety of activities.

One of the most important functions of the community center is to give children a place to gather after school, whether to do homework or to spend time with friends. “The kids in town don’t really have a place to go and spend time after they get done with school. We want them to use this center as a resource for studying and just for hanging out, “ says community member and volunteer Deana Seng. Dansville’s community center includes a Coffee Time hour for adults and workers in need of a morning coffee spot. Starting during the month of November, Coffee Time runs 7-9:30 am every Wednesday.

The community center prepares weekend food kits for children and families in need. Every Friday the food is distributed to students in the Dansville Elementary School to assure that no child or family is without food during the weekend. Each kit includes food items such as Ramen Noodles, mac and cheese, oatmeal, granola bars, soup, fruit snacks and occasionally, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Abigail Seng explained the hard work that the Dansville community came together to complete when renovating the building into a community center. “We did everything from painting, to flooring, even taking the old pews out of the church. Most of the things that we took out of the old church were donated to the community.”

Pastor Jeremy Wicks, the founding force behind the creation of the community center, began production on the new site almost immediately after the old church was closed down in February. “It is needless to say that all of the hard work has finally paid off as the final touches for the opening have been completed,” says Pastor Wicks.
