East Lansing residents will be looking for remedies for “Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia,” the medical name for brain freeze, on 7-Eleven’s “Bring Your Own Cup Day” on Saturday.

From 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Saturday, Slurpee-lovers will be able to bring nearly any cup they please to fill with their desired Slurpee flavor for $1.49.

“I think this is a great idea,” said Michigan State senior MaryGrace Mayotte. “It’s much more sustainable and will encourage customers to bring in reusable cups.”

Blue Raspberry is Mayotte’s Slurpee of choice, and her “perfect-sized” cup is a reused one from NCG Cinemas.

The price tag of $1.49 plus is the usual cost of a standard medium-sized cup.

Customers are encouraged to use the hashtag #BYOCupDay.

For sanitary reasons, the cup must be clean and fit upright in the 10-inch diameter hole next to the Slurpee machine.

Margaret Chabris, public relations director for 7-Eleven, Inc., said “From what we’ve seen on social media, a lot of people are going to have fun with this and bring creative containers,” said Chabris. “You could bring a teapot, trophy or even a vase!”

Strategies started showing up during the beginning of the year after positive feedback from 7-Eleven locations in Australia, Canada, Malaysia and the Philippines, which had Bring Your Own Cup Day, Chabris said.

“I would fill the slurpee in an ice cream cone to make a Slurpee cone,” said MSU sophomore Connor Wood.

Slurpees purchased on “BYO Cup Day” will count toward the 7Rewards. Once downloaded, customers scan the app barcode at their checkout and their seventh drink is free, and that can include any size coffee, Slurpee or iced coffee.

“Let’s have some fun here,” said Chabris. “Our customers are extremely creative and I imagine they will express themselves with their cup of choice.”
