Next year, visitors to Hawk Island County Park in Lansing will have a new space for picnics and parties. Ingham County parks allocated $11,000 this fall to construct the Hawk Island Cabana picnic structure which will hold around 50 people and have picnic tables.

A large portion of this project is funded by a $5,000 donation from the Friends of Ingham County Parks. The remaining construction costs will be covered by a $6,000 allocation from the Ingham County Capital Improvement Fund.

Hawk Island Park has over 450,000 visitors each year making it the busiest park in the Ingham County Parks system. Because it is so popular, the three existing picnic structures are already booked for every weekend from May to September of 2014.

Karen Fraser, director of development for the Friends of Ingham County Parks, said the goal of the new cabana is to help meet the large demand for picnic structures at the park.

“I think the cabana is a great idea and will allow us to serve more customers in the park,” Fraser said. “Anytime we can find a new way to better meet the needs of the public is a good day.”

The cabana will cost $75 to rent for the day. Reservations for summer 2014 can be made now by calling the Ingham County Parks Department at 517-676-2233.
