OKEMOS—Community members of Meridian Township and Williamstown Township can receive a crime scene investigation instruction from the Meridian Township Youth Citizens’ Academy.

This free program will be held Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m., March 14 to May 2. The program normally begins in February.

“This program also helps to build a relationship between the student and police officers,” said Sgt. Dawn Sawallich.

This seven-week program started in 2006. It gives students instruction in areas such as traffic enforcement, alcohol enforcement and crime scene investigation. Students learn how police handle crime scenes in real world.

“It’s like CSI, but it’s not on TV. I actually get to do it myself which is pretty cool,” said Christine Pollack, a former participant of the Youth Academy. “I learned a lot and I definitely gained more respect for officers.”

The Youth Citizens’ Academy takes place at the Meridian Township Public Safety Building, 5151 Marsh Road. Applications are on the Meridian Charter Township website, or call 517-853-4800 to enroll.
