Williamston High School is offering open gym time Sundays 12:30-4 p.m.
The main gym in the high school is open to all ages with basketball being one of the more popular options.
Jeff West, the father of two elementary students, said open gym is a great way for kids to get involved in sports that they either did not want to play, or had limited playing time in middle school and high school. It also gives an opportunity for kids not interested in organized team sports to play.
Superintendent Narda Murphy said the gym was opened to the community after several people showed interest. The pool and the fitness center are also available with a membership or small fee for short time use.
The facilities are funded by a recreation millage ,which means general funding is not affected.
Secretary Ernie Gaffner said the recreation millage was passed May 5, 2009, adding .75 mills to property tax notices.
The recreation millage costs a person with a $130,000 house about $50 per year.
“it is the most fantastic opportunity available and I think more people should know that it is available,” West said.
