OKEMOS — Vine & Brew has been open for a little less than seven weeks and that turnout since its grand opening has been astonishing. Locally owned Vine & Brew combines specialty wine, beer and a few extras for a large selection of alcoholic beverages and creative ways of buying beer in Okemos.

Owner Curt Kosal and his wife said that their love of cooking inspired them to open the store.

Kosal said that they didn’t want their approach to wine to be as stuffy, but fun and down to earth.

“Beer and wine should enhance an enjoyable meal,” said Kosal.

Vine & Brew highlights Michigan made products, beer and wine, along with specialities from around the world.

They offer create-your-own six packs, where you can pick up to six different beers with no up-charge instead of buying a whole six pack of the same beer.

Kosal said, “lots of customers like that they can try new things without trying a new six pack.”

White or red, Vine & Brew offers a new approach to buying wine. Create-your-own six pack isn’t only for beer but wine as well.

Costumer Jeff Donahue said that he frequents Vine & Brew because he likes that he can purchase a variety of beers in one six pack. He said his wife really enjoys the six-pack selection of wines, too.

“We want to let people get creative,” said Kosal.

Customers who bring six shopping bags back you can create their own six pack for six percent off. If they have 12 or more bags then they receive a mixed case 10 percent off.

Kosal said that he and his wife are working to grow the store’s speciality food items. They focus on Michigan made products and small producers such as Farm Boy Tortilla Chips made from heirloom corn.

“The store will continue to grow,” said Kosal. He said that discovering new products like Skillet Bacon Spread, which is like a bacon jam, helps grow the store’s specialty products.

Kosal said that the possibility of selling home brewing systems is in Vine and Brew’s near future.

Kosal said he saw opportunity in opening Vine and Brew. With the economy starting to shift, Kosal said that he thinks people want to support local businesses and local products more now.

Kosal has been in the wine, beer and spirits industry for 16 years. One of Kosal’s friends suggested that him and his wife should open a shop because of their knowledge in the industry.
