OKEMOS — Lake Lansing Park North has scheduled prescribed burns for late March of this year.

Prescribed burns are controlled burns that occur in woodland, wetland, and prairie areas to eliminate invasive species and stimulate natural ground cover to occur.

PlantWise Restoration, of Ann Arbor is performing the burns. It has already performed burns in Williamston Township, Lansing Township and the City of Lansing, said David Mindell, project coordinator for PlantWiseRestoration.

The Meridian Township Environmental Commission met last week to discuss the burning with Mindell as a guest speaker on the topic.

“A big part of the reason we (had) this presentation is to educate our own commission, as well as the public, on this potentially scary topic,” said James Jackson, chair of the Meridian Township Environmental Commission.

The township’s Land Preservation Board will cover the cost of the restoration, and citizens will continue to be involved and updated through letters, press releases and community meetings about the burns.
