The Old Town Commercial Association has added a new member. Michigan Pride is now affiliated with the OTCA.
Could this cause problem in Old Town? According to Todd Heywood, senior writer for the Michigan Messenger, it can cause problems. “In Old Town there were paintings created that portrayed the words, kill gays,” said Heywood.
“Michigan Pride is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides education, outreach, support, and events to enhance the lives of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgendered (LGBT) people and builds quality relationships with all Michigan residents,” according to an online article on the Old Town website.
“They have paid their dues,” said Brittney Hozskiw, executive director of the OTCA. “Michigan Pride has been a part of Old Town for quite awhile, the OTCA is now adding them as a member.”
“Gays are harmful to our society,” said Carl Ream, resident of Lansing. “Marriage should be between a man and a woman. That’s the way it always has been and it should stay that way.”
Old Town is perceived as a very gay friendly community. According to the Michigan Pride website, one of their goals is to establish an LGBT community center in Lansing. With the OTCA adding Michigan Pride as a member, Michigan Pride is now a step closer to reaching their goal.
“Any business that joins the OTCA receives several member services,” said Hozskiw.
