Paxton Countertops and Showers, a longtime, family-owned business in Grand Ledge, opened a retail store in downtown Grand Ledge. As they expand into retail, the firm will add local jobs.

Dave Paxton, a co-owner of Paxton Countertops and Showers, said that the opening of the new location required hiring four new employees. They expect to hire about eight more people.

“My dad started it [the existing business] thirty years ago,” said Paxton.

Rachel Paxton-Schroeder, co-owner and operation manager for the office, said her father started fabricating countertops in his garage in 1979.

“We’ve been here our entire lives and we just want to service Grand Ledge, really. We feel like there is enough here for us,” said Paxton-Schroeder.

The opening of the retail shop in downtown Grand Ledge is a huge milestone for the Paxton’s. The new location is a new direction for the company, working directly with the retail public as opposed to working behind the scenes is “a new thing for us,” she said.

Dewey Charter, a Paxton employee, said he hopes that the new location generates lots of business. “Now it’s downtown, so walk-up business should be better,” he said.

Charter works as a fabricator and installer and has been with Paxton Countertops for about three-and-a-half months . “It’s great, a great company to work for…all employees are good people to be around,” said Charter.

Customers of Paxton Countertops and Showers also made an appearance at the grand opening. Nell Floeter, a Grand Ledge local, said Paxton Countertops and Showers installed her kitchen countertop and she loves their services and product. “They are wonderful people,” said Floeter. “It is a good Grand Ledge business to support.”
