Hard alcohol ban imposed on fraternities

Michigan State’s Inter-Fraternity council voted unanimously to ban any alcohol above a 15 percent content. The news came in a letter from council members posted to the Michigan State Fraternity and Sorority Facebook page. The ban will be imposed on all 29 houses in September 2019. Women’s Center builds program to help women enter skilled trades

The Women’s Center of Greater Lansing is helping area women build careers in the skilled trades, one concrete slab and brick at a time. The center graduated its first class of six students in July from the new Women in Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Readiness Program. It’s among several programs at the center designed to help women re-enter the workforce.

Restaurants feel loss when internationals students leave

Every summer Ginny Cheung makes the decision to close her East Lansing Chinese restaurant for a few weeks to travel. With her largely Asian college student customer base on summer break, it didn’t make financial sense to keep the doors open. But this summer, East Café located at 1001 E. Grand River Ave. didn’t close its doors. “There are still a few students staying for the summer,” she said.

Larry Nassar sentenced to 60 years. What is MSU doing?

It’s sad how Michigan State knew about the sexual misconduct of Larry Nassar but didn’t do anything, said David Mittleman, attorney who represents 37 victims of Larry Nassar. Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison, three counts of 20 years each, for child pornography. He has seven counts against him and is waiting for trail to hear his sentencing for the other counts that he has not been charged for. Nassar sexually assaulted and abused members of the Michigan State University gymnastics team and members of the USA Olympic gymnastics team. “This is the biggest institutional sexual assault scandal in modern day history,” said Mittleman.

#MeToo campaign causing stir across MSU campus

After The New York Times published a stunning article saying Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein has been sexually abusing various Hollywood actresses and models throughout his career, the discussion of sexual assault has surfaced to the front page news. The article stated that Weinstein, popular for movies like Django Unchained and Gangs of New York reached many settlements with women who accused him of sexual abuse. Actress Ashley Judd came out criticizing the producer saying he sexually assaulted her when she was a young, eager actress trying to break into the business. Judd is not the only actress that has come forward.  Since then, actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale and 54 others have come forward with stories about Weinstein’s abuse. Alyssa Milano, popular for her role on King of Queens and Saved By The Bell posted on Twitter “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.”

MSU offers free flu shots for faculty

Every year, influenza becomes a large illness that overtakes many people’s health.  According the the American Hospital Association, on average, 25 million people get infected with influenza every year.  Five to 50,000 people die every year from this illness. The best way to prevent this: getting your flu shot.  Every year, the flu changes and so does the vaccination.  The AHA says it takes about two weeks for the vaccination to work in your body.  Getting it done early is recommended. The University Physician on campus offers free flu clinics for faculty and staff.  The first one was located in the MSU Main Library. Kate Comby is a retired librarian from MSU and she still drives to campus to get her flu shot every year. “It’s been a routine for me for years,” said Comby.  She’s been getting her flu shot every year since she was in college.  She worked at MSU and came into contact with the illness because she was surrounded by students who were sick.
