Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero declared a local snow emergency on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in anticipation of the snowstorm that was expected to strike the area at night.
This declaration allows the city to restrict traffic on roadways and request a state of disaster or emergency declaration from Gov. Rick Snyder.
Bernero also said at a press conference that Lansing City Hall and its related offices will remain open tomorrow, but only emergency personnel will be required to report. This includes all police and fire department employees and personnel involved in snow-clearing operations. The city has a public hotline that residents and employees can call for information. Lansing Public Services Director Chad Gamble has said crews will start clearing snow at 11 p.m. and remain working 24 hours a day on the cities 20 plow routes until roads are clear.
Emergency Housing Sites Set Up
Emergency housing for homeless people and others who need shelter has been arranged at Volunteers of America, City Rescue Mission Family Center, Haven House and Loaves and Fishes.
The Weather Channel is reporting estimates of snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches and gusts of up to 45 mph. At 9 p.m., the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issued a blizzard warning for Ingham County that is to last until 7 p.m. Wednesday.
