Teaching Environmental Film Production

Michigan State University journalism students learned the basics of shooting and editing short environmental documentaries for a semester-long environmental film production class.

Offered by the Michigan State University School of Journalism and Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, the course helped students develop their analytical skills through watching videos and engaging in discussions of contemporary issues in electronic media as they relate to bringing an environmental story to the screen.

Students learned strategies for finding an environmental story suitable for video production and in researching, writing and developing it. They also learned some basic techniques in the use of camera, lighting, sound and editing equipment.
