About 3 billion dollars is going towards infrastructure for General Motors in the Lansing area.

To be exact, 2.6 billion dollars is the amount allocated for a new battery cell manufacturing plant in Lansing. The battery cell will power electric vehicles which is an industry GM plans to lead by 2025, according to its news release.

Five-hundred ten million dollars will go towards upgrading the Lansing Delta Township and Lansing Grand River assembly plants.

The cars made at these assembly pants are gas-powered, but GM Communications manager Daniel Flores said these products are really important to GM’s investment in an all-electric future.

“Our current business has to be strong so we can invest in the future to convert everything to EVs [electric vehicles]. So what we’re doing in Lansing right now is really important and what we’re going to be doing in the future with the battery cell work is just as important to our future,” Flores said.

The battery cell plant is made possible by Ultium Cells, a joint venture business between GM and LG Energy Solutions. It is expected to create 1,700 new jobs when it starts producing battery cells in late 2024.

Vice President of Operations for Ultium Cells Tom Gallagher said these will be well-paying manufacturing jobs a part of “an organization that is really driving the electrification future in the automotive sector.”
