Capital News Service correspondents at Michigan State University earn statehouse reporting experience and professional bylines that provide a significant edge in the job market.

They are eligible to compete for more than $10,000 a year in scholarships and awards available only to CNS students.

Reporters cover state government – issues and personalities – for 30 Michigan news organizations in Lansing’s largest news bureau.  They interview important newsmakers of the day – the governor, Supreme Court justices, lawmakers, department heads, lobbyists, leaders of public interest groups.

They also talk with “real people” to find out how state policies formulated in Lansing affect their daily lives in their hometowns.

Michigan State University students can enroll in Capital News Service (JRN 420) for 3 credits in the fall or the spring or both.

Correspondents are mostly School of Journalism students. Some come from other MSU majors and are encouraged to apply. Students immediately report for member news organizations. If your background is other than journalism, discuss your interest directly with the instructor.

Instructor approval is required for admission. Click here for an application.

If selected, you will register for JRN 420 for 3 credits. You may take up to 6 credits over two semesters.
